I'm shocked, shocked that she hasn't changed her mind since '08. But she doesn't control the state machinery yet, so impact will be limited beyond the media splash.

Should be interesting to see how much this impacts Romney's performance in Iowa.

DeMint's endorsement will follow New Hampshire.

It's over early if Gingrich loses Iowa.

You think DeMint is going to trigger a Black Friday-style run on his political capital by doing that? His silence alone indicates that he sees no viable ABR- even some Ryanesque warm words for Romney might not be forthcoming.

Also, Branstad questioned Gingrich's judgment today in an AP interview, and that will definitely swing votes.

Fabulous news. Her approvals are down, but she still has a lot of Tea Party cred which should help him. His early endorsement of her back in the 2010 primary probably highly influenced her decision. Wink

I figure the state machinery would be for Romney(aka the establishment candidate).? Since Bush and McCain both won SC against the populist choice in 2000 and 2008.

I probably have more sway in South Carolina than Nikki Haley.

I have a feeling the GOP is planning to go all in with Mitt Romney. There's a lot on the line.

Another to consider- this might not be a desirable endorsement.

This will help Romney and the Gingrich victory in Iowa seems more and more distant.

I've been expecting this to happen from the get-go. Demint's will also happen sometime before South Carolina votes.

Correct answer both times.

Got a robocall Friday afternoon with Haley's voice on it announcing this unsurprising endorsement.  Mitt actually endorsed Haley fairly early in 2010 before she gained momentum in the polls, tho at the time, I thought he did so in order to avoid being drawn into taking sides between the top candidates.

Haley seems to be catching some flak from the endorsement: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1211/70580.html

Unless she can radically turn her approvals around before Summer 2012 (a daunting task, but not impossible) I don't see Romney choosing her as a VP.

Even an endorsement from Strom Thurmond's Reanimated Corpse wouldn't help Mitt in South Carolina.

And every 20-monther who endorses is looking for a Veep slot?

I'm disappointed that this thread's title doesn't refer to Haley Barbour.

While I don't like Haley or Romney, there is no reason to bash Haley for this.  Romney endorsed Haley early in the 2010 gubernatorial primary, and there is no candidate running who can be said to be a perfect match or even a great match for Haley's central issues.  In a real sense, the surprising thing is she waited so long to make this endorsement, but it looks like she made her choice some time ago, but the announcement was delayed to coincide with the start of Romney's South Carolina media blitz.
