For the same reason many other opinions are popular on the internet; it's an ability to publically but anonymously express opinion and speak to likeminded individuals.

Also, for groups whose views are in the minority and have had difficulty getting exposure for their views using traditional mediums the internet is a rather cost effective way of getting said exposure.
