When I was a kid, D&D was seen by my friend group as something just a little too nerdy for us (mind you we were not too nerdy to play a dice and paper baseball themed game) and I have not really had an opportunity to play since.  By my son has been playing with his friends for a few years and the wife has gotten the bug (she watches people play on YouTube) and wants to play and I've always been fascinated by the game, so we're doing a trial run this Sunday with my kid as the DM.

Thoughts?  Suggestions?  Luck?  Is it still too nerdy for me?

As a novice player, I strongly recommend that you do not play a spellcaster. Keep it simple for your first character.

It was fun.  We played for a couple or 3 hours, the wife wanted to "investigate" everything, as if she was on a cop show and that slowed us down.  Killed me a troll.  We're planning on playing every Monday.

Congrats! Looks like I'll be going to a character builder sesh myself on Thursday. Only played a few times, and in very informal environments so far.

Nice one. I've been playing with my old undergrad D&D group over discord since the pandemic started, and it's been a vital distraction over the last 8 months.

Human fighter is definitely the right place to start. I ended up with a Cleric after we lost a ton of characters early on, and it's definitely a steeper learning curve.
