Despite his victory in the Massachussets Senate race in 1958, come the 1960 Primaries the party decides to plump for someone with more age experience for the job. Although Kennedy ran a tough campaign, Lyndon Johnson of Texas is nominated as Democratic candidate, choosing Minnesota Senator and Primary runner-up Hubert H. Humphrey as his running mate.
