Here are some fundamentals:

It gets its name from the fact that musicians would constantly be staring down at distortion pedals during their performance. The last example is more of a metal song, but still a staple among shoegazers.

Generally cannot get into shoegaze bands. I like a few bands that incorporate elements of shoegaze, but I find that bands of that style do not really have much to contribute to the genre that hasn't already been made.
