Huh, surprising that Lott never got his turn at the governor's mansion. He'd probably not be as bad as Bryant on healthcare issues, at least.

Probably. But it's a sort of irony: when Lott was first elected in 1972 no one considered him to be anything, but extreme conservative... Times change...

Yes. They do.

Seriously?  This clown should never be allowed in the GOP leadership again.

Bryant is terrible and is substantially just as conservative as a Chris McDaniel or Michael Watson type would be.  Reeves in 2019 would not be an improvement, and would actually probably be marginally worse.

Hopefully we can get some sensibility back in Jackson sometime soon.

I don't know. Trent Lott said something nice about someone on their birthday, so he never gets to hold political office ever again apparently.

Yea, the Lott hatred needs to sit down and take a breather. There are far too many Tea Partiers saying dumb things to continue hating on Lott.

fwiw, I like Lott, and think his Thurmond comments were moderately controversial, but nothing to go crazy about, hatred wise.

Lott's comments about Thurmond were wrong, but I don't think he was all that serious when he made them. His "no" votes on the MLK holiday and the VRA extension are more bothersome to me.

Gonna have to disagree on Lott not deserving the criticism he got. First, let's look at the quote: "When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We’re proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over the years, either." So he's saying that if the country had elected someone who, at the time, was openly and unapolagetically racist, then things would be "better" (presumably for whites only) than the reality where the country elected people who were supportive or at the very least ambivalent towards racial integration. That's pretty damning and rightfully disqualifies himself from public office. Sure, Tea Partiers today say stupid and racist stuff, and they are rightfully criticized as well, but that doesn't excuse what Lott said by any means.

Tea Partiers haven't done the sheer amount of damage to the country that Lott has.
