1968

Romney/Chafee                     328
McCarthy/McGovern               133
Wallace/Sanders                     77

Chafee does not bring in Rhode Island and McGovern does not bring in South Dakota.

This, but I'd add Florida to Wallace even before Tennessee.

I agree with this map and Kalwejt's suggestions. Romney would be considered the only non-extreme candidate and would thus win handily.

Wait a minute.

George Romney had been an extremely successful and popular Governor of Michigan since 1963.

Of course he wins Michigan.

What was I thinking?

New map.

Romney/Chafee             349
McCarthy/McGovern       112
Wallace/Sanders             77

McCarthy was not an "extreme candidate".

Is Romney pro-war or anti-war in this scenario? Part of Nixon's success was his ability to stake out a centrist stance on Vietnam while appealing to both the moderate and conservative factions of the Republican Party. I'm not sure a Romney/Chafee ticket has this same appeal.

In that case, Romney wins a landslide similar to Dewey's map above.

I'll wager he doesn't. Wallace was the Southern candidate. Segregation now and forever, and that really wouldn't play well outside the South no matter who else was on the ticket.
