Let's try to make this board a little more highbrow, in subject matter if not in other respects Smiley

Would you have supported the Chartists? If not, why not? And so on.

I might have if they wouldn't have rioted. That seems a little sketchy if you ask me. I mean I understand they try to represent the people and make the government more fair and equal, but how can you trust a party that breaks out into violence? It's like the Anarchists in the U.S. when they had the Haymarket riot, they lost trust and credibility.

Well, now, that depends. Am I a white Briton in the societal class which I occupy now? If so, then I probably wouldn't have. Am I an Indian resident in Britain? If so, definitely. Etc.

But again, put yourself in the shoes of someone at the time, would you really support a party associated with violence?

Depends on my circumstances.  Given my present views, I would no doubt be very sympathetic to their goals; if I were a relatively well off individual, I may be less fond of them.

You wouldn't be able to support any government of the era otherwise.

Yes, of course.
