In an editorial, the Jackson Clarion Ledger speculates on whether Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS) will seek run for re-election in 2008, citing the fact that he turns 70 next year and has raised only $1.1 million, a “puny” amount, according to the newspaper.

Last month, Cochran said he would make a formal decision after last week's elections.

CQ rates the seat as Safe Republican.

Cochran wouldn't even need a tenth of that to win re-election.

I of course am rooting for a retirement and a Mike Moore run for the seat, but with the current leadership of MS Democratic Party I'm not especially confident of a Moore victory.  Here's hoping that Moore can win in spite of them!

Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) said Wednesday that he will seek reelection in 2008, casting aside rumors of his impending retirement.

Cochran, who will turn 70 next month, has not raised a lot of money this cycle but had previously said he planned to run for reelection.

“While I delayed making this decision until after our state and local government elections were over, there is no reason to delay any longer,” Cochran said in a statement. “I have enjoyed serving in the Senate, and I am highly honored to have had the support and encouragement to continue this service from friends throughout the state.”

And the NRSC breathes a sigh of relief - MS moves into the Safe Republican.  The question is, will Cochran have any Democratic opposition?  He didn't in 2002, and won re-election with 85% of the vote.

Terrific, he is one of my favorite Republican Senators, and there are very few at that.

Fuck.

We'll have to put all our resources in winning the open MS-3 seat, I suppose.

cochran even does reasonably well in the black counties.
that's because of his opponents, not because of anything special about him...
In 1990 and 2002, he didn't have a D opponent, and in 1996, it was a frequent candidate who ran for the D nomination for everything every election.

He has those opponents because everybody knows he's invincible.

in that case, you should get your hero eaves to run against him.

against eaves, i bet cochran would do a lot better in the black counties than barbour did.

To be fair to Cochran, its not just that he doesn't have Democratic opponents, its that he has been a good and solid Senator for Mississippi.  Unlike Trent Lott, he doesn't appear to have any kind of murky past on racial issues and seems to have done all he can to represent his state wisely and well and help all his constituients.  When you've been in office since 1978, I think some people just start voting for you out of loyal habit - that was the case with Strom Thurmond.

yeah, Cochran's a good guy.  I won't be voting for him, but I can deal with having him as my senator.  I can't say the same about Lott.
