Although never have been a fan of FN I am pretty happy with that result.
I wonder if European media will be so aggressive towards France as they were after victory of PiS  in parliamentary elections in Poland. FN nowadays is rather not radical, typical  right-wing big tent (even with centre-right elements) but of coarse there will be a lot of left-liberal butthurt.

Lol, Le Pen is republican, why good result of FN should be somehow significant considering any eras in history of French Republic?

Both PIS in Poland and FN in France are not radical, and no threat for democracy in those countries. Europe's commie media hype nothing else...

European media? What's that?

Well, I don't know whether 'she' is a threat for democracy but 'she' is its sickness.

She overall is a very bad clown, that a few days ago was threatening people with the fact that France could be ruled by radical Islamism soon if we lose the 'war against IS', with all women forced to wear burka and so on...

And all of this makes big media noise and fascinates people, just as if they were fascinated by the worst, just as if the more it sounds unrealistic and scary the most it sounds fascinating and makes it easier to make you believe in.

You believe in what you want to believe in, don't you?

Even if she takes quite pitiful bad theater tone when she tries to offer us that scary bad 'play' there is always more audience apparently...

Bad clown, sad joke.

Sad clown, bad joke.

Please don't talk about things you clearly know very little or nothing about. It looks bad.

Holy smokes Batman... this colour-coded map shows just how strong the far-right loony FN has become:

I'm a bit suprised (and dissapointed) that LR didn't win the popular vote nationally and PS held on to Bretagne. Wouldn't they be upset about the regional gerrymandering reorganization?

Bretagne eventually remained intact as a region, without any changes. Why would they be upset about this?

Clueless equating a historically fascist party with PiS and the other New Right populists in Europe.

You have no understanding as to why FN and the Le Pen family should never be anywhere near power.

The people saying RIP France are also not to be listened to. 27% of half the population is not enough to destroy a state Ffs. Panick mongering is though.

I am not French so I am looking on that issue from different perspective, I have no personal hatred for the Le Pen family and also no sympathy. From Polish perspective they are now nationalists for casuals - boring, especially after "kicking" Jean Marie from FN. And about comparing PiS and FN actually most of the foreign news papers were saying a lot of bullsh**t calling PiS nationalist, xenophobic etc. that is why I am wondering what will be reaction of biggest newspapers, especially German ones for the French results.

And guys, don't be so aggressive - for me the best result would be the best score for parties like Parti occitan or all those Breton parties. I don't really like FN. I just don't understand your panic. You have still two years for the presidential elections, so these which really matters - everything can happen until then.

Yes, of course all liberal Western newspapers are currently complaining in a similar way as when PiS won the Polish election. That is the best part about the French election results. The fact that people are still so clueless as to where such Western European election results stem from, on the other hand, makes me sad (the Polish case is rather different in that regard; Eastern Europe and Western Europe are still hardly comparable).

Fun fact, if you remember Grzegorz Braun from Polish presidential elections:

on his FB profile people in comments are butthurting that someone (probably admin of his fanpage) congratulated FN after publishing the result and angry fans are calling FN "socialists" Curly

It seems that in the two places where the Le Pens are in the running, Nord-Pas-de-Calais-Picardie and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, PS has withdrawn their list in order to stop FN.  I wonder if parties/fronts like FG and EELV will follow suit and call for their supporters to vote for the Center-Right.  If not I am not sure how the FN will be stopped.

Any third-place finisher who does not withdraw now, should be considered a fascist enabler and treated accordingly.

Certainly, no decent person should ever consider voting for them. Hopefully, their only political outlet from that point on would be FN.

Personally, I would never talk to such people without making sure to call them "fascist scum" in their face.

The most obvious one that did not take place is Alsace-Champagne-Ardenne-Lorraine where FN is well ahead.  Unless there are large tactical voting Left voters, the FN is in a good position.

To be fair, whilst, obviously, FN look set to do very well here, they're only up by about 2.5% from their previous results in the local and European elections, which they also came first in (votes wise), so surely this is more of a confirmation of existing trends rather than a shocking breakthrough (although the probability of the party actually getting to run something major is new I guess)?

Also, I see the one man band of laughs Ag has returned to enlighten us all with his measured and thoughtful wisdom.

One place the FN can go hunting for votes to ensure its victory in the second round in places where it has a realistic shot at winning are to go after the DLF votes.  DLF did not seem to give instructions to its supports as to who to vote for in the second round and they seem to refuse to fuse for the places where it cross 5% but I suspect a large section of DLF will go to FN.

What percentage does the third party have to reach in order to make the runoff a triangulaire?

5% to fuse, 10% to maintain your list.

But they really didn't want to make it simple and accessful to people, because, régionales list belong to what happens on départementales lists...

For those who understand French, a good enough video from Le Monde tries to explain it:

http://www.lemonde.fr/elections-regionales-2015/video/2015/12/05/comprendre-les-elections-regionales-en-2-minutes_4825256_4640869.html

They really screwed it up...all the way...with those 'fancy' regionales créations...

How does this 5% to fuse work ?  I assume a party that wins 5%-10% can form an alliance with another party that crossed the 10% mark.  Will this party still get an independent line ? If not how will the seats be distributed as the voter will not be able to indicate their preferences when they vote for this fusion line?  Can two parties that are in the 5%-10% fuse or do they HAVE to fuse with a party that crossed 10%?

Why did they change the rules? I thought it was always 12.5% of registered voters to make it into the second round?  If seems like this new system makes it easier for the FN to win as it makes it possible for various smaller center-right and center-left to make it into the second round to split the anti-FN vote.
