I mean, nominees typically do take into account the popularity of a potential VP with the party base. But they also need to consider the general electorate and how well they work together as President and Vice President.

I read John Kerry's autobiography. When choosing a VP, he was told by staff he had to decide either a Mr. August or Mr. October.

Mr. August would be someone Democrats would love and want to see at the convention. Mr. October would be someone who would help win the general election and appeal to swing state voters. The perfect VP would be both.

Kerry's advice to Obama in 2008? Pick a Mr. January. Someone who would make the best possible Vice President.

Ironically, Jon Edwards was neither.
John Kerry has said multiple times he regrets picking Edwards
