Low turnout election + Quinn's unpopularity + maybe some Obama unpopularity all conspired to drag Durbin down a bit. Same narrative as the country, only adjusted to Illinois.

The collar counties are swing counties. Will voted for Clinton in 1992, Lake + Will for him in 1996, Bush won all of them twice, Obama won all twice (minus McHenry in 2012, DuPage and Kane were pluralities).

They voted for Edgar twice in the 1990s, then Ryan in 2002, Like + Will split for Blago in 2006, then they all voted for Brady and Rauner.

In 1996 only Lake supported Durbin, all supported Fitzgerald in 1998, Lake + Will supported Durbin in 2002, all supported Obama in 2004 and Durbin in 2008, and all supported Kirk in 2010.

The 3 western/northwestern counties all returned to their Republican roots (not surprising), and Quinn/Rauner dragged Durbin down even more (just surprising by how much).
