No this isn't so odd folks.  White Catholics for the vast majority of American history were on the "outs"of society.  White Protestants were on the "ins" of society.  They have only recently become competitive thanks to the upward mobility they experienced for most of the last century that made them more amendable to "Americanism".  The upper class lace curtain class stockbroker has much less cultural allegiance to the Democratic Party than his union member father did just thirty years ago.
