I agree, Bush deserves far more credit for destroying the economy and the Middle East than he actually gets. It's easier to blame the black guy.

Anyway, I don't see why anyone of any ideological persuasion would vote for Dubya.

No; he gets far less credit for protecting our country during the war on terror.  Clinton and Congressional Republicans were the ones who destroyed the economy by repealing Glass-Steagall.

For those wondering how America would vote in an election between the two at their primes, just two states had a greater Bush v. Kerry margin than Reagan v. Mondale: Alabama and West Virginia. So the map would look something like this (averaging electoral votes out and using '90s totals):



Reagan beats Bush 524-14.

Bush, for the sole reason than his obvious incompetence will keep future presidents from invoking his legacy. Reagan, on the other hand, was an effective communicator, so we'll be dealing with trickle-down economics and anti-government hysteria for decades.
