...why did people think he was going to be a Presidential hopeful? He sounds like an Oompa Loompa with a smoking habit.

Democrats used to think they could only win elections with white Southern males. So it was basically him or John Edwards.

Yes, and he is also the son of former Sen. John Warner (R-VA), as well as a Muslim.
