Django Unchained yesterday. Solid film, pretty funny at points, and Samuel L. Jackson's character was hilarious. However, it seemed the end was rather drawn out.

The Dictator. I thought it was hilarious, obviously not Borat-good, but still a lot of great jokes. The little speech at the end is a nice update of Charlie Chaplin's too.

I don't get to movies often, and was pleased that when the opportunity presented itself my family was willing to go with my first choice - Lincoln. The performances were excellent, but I particularly enjoyed how it made the oft despised underbelly of political dealing a necessary act to achieve a higher good.

Looper

Brilliant premise, brilliant first and second act, merely good third act. Still one of the best sci-fi films in a while. The scene with the older version of Paul Dano's character was such a great idea and execution.

The Hurt Locker on DVD.

What surprised me the most was the Capri Sun pouches. I never knew that sickly sweet stuff existed outside Germany.

Flight.

It's a good thing it had Denzel Washington, because not many actors could've pulled off that role. He carried the movie. The scene of the accident was also awesome in how intense it was. Be aware that this movie is quite a lot more heavy than the trailer implied. It's actually realistic in that things carry out as they likely would in real life, not how they often do in movies.

Promised Land, a movie about a natural gas salesman in rural Pennsylvania trying to convince the country folk to sell their land.

Chinatown for the third time and the first time on the big screen. As amazing as ever and it really does get better on every viewing.

I moved to Perth a few months ago, and from Dec. 9 - Jan. 8, I had my first out of state trip since moving here, which involved (for work purposes) trips to Sydney and Melbourne, and then a ~2.5 week trip to the USA to visit family for the holidays.  Watched quite a few movies in both cinemas and airplanes.  I think this is the complete list:

Safety Not Guaranteed
Robot & Frank
Inglourious Basterds
Moonrise Kingdom
True Grit
Hugo
The Hobbit
Elf*
Lincoln
Django Unchained
Love Affair
Les Miserables
Argo
Jack Reacher
Love
The Big Sleep
Ruby Sparks
Toy Story
Beasts of the Southern Wild

* Elf is the only one of those that I'd already seen before.

"Love" (about an astronaut alone on the ISS who loses contact with Earth) was by far the strangest of the bunch.

Roman Polanski is/was (more was, really) a great film director. Him as a person is another matter entirely.

I watched that about six months ago.  I was in a period of watching Luis Buñuel movies, and I have to say that that one was the strangest of the bunch.  It was pretty funny, but I never could figure out who he was trying to make fun of.  (The military?  The church?  Politicians?)  I could discern no plot other than constant interruptions during an attempt to eat.  I suppose that was the whole point, what with dinner being the central ritual of the upper middle class.

Watched a few recently:

Bottle Rocket

Barton Fink

Wow... a lot of stuff going on here...

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974 original)

Skyfall

Finally got around to this. Easily the best Craig Bond movie yet. By a lot.

And, damn, you guys weren't kidding about about the TDK influence...

Barton Fink has some great scenes, especially when John Goodman is involved.

Yes, the final scene with him in it is pretty incredible.

After seeing John Goodman in Argo and Flight, I've concluded a cameo with him can do no wrong.

Just got back from back to back showings of Django and Zero Dark Thirty.  Both excellent films, very impressive.
