The reason why VA moved D due to John Warner became good friends with John McCain and he voted against the climate change agenda on ANWR and voted for Campaign finance reform and no child left behind. Like Vonovich, Colemen, Judd Gregg, John Warner became a maverick. This is why Va moved left

Providing "someone else" as an option is even lazier than "generic Democrat", especially now that we have the field narrowed down to just a few candidates that can get the nomination. Obviously most voters don't like Trump, but a certain percentage will flock to him once they figure out its Bernie Sanders or whoever as the alternative. Junk it.

Because liberals in NoVA didn't bother showing up to the polls, that's why.

It was not until the massive D voter registration drive in 2006 (to unseat George Allen) and 2008 (Obama) that the political dynamic of Virginia changed.  Forever.
