Did the Rhode Islanders rather want to express their genuine love for Bernie, or rather their blazing hatred for Hillary?

Uh, neither? It's possible a majority of voters preferred Sanders to Hillary without having a "genuine love" or "blazing hatred" for either.

Option 1.

Given the economics of Rhode Island I wasn't too surprised that Bernie won there.

Rhode Island is a left-wing state. To the left of the local Democratic Party. That's why a left-wing independent got elected the governor before last.

I always thought RI was a right-wing Democratic state. Really. Who's right?

Clearly anti-Hillary, and I'm very concerned about Trump taking the Island State this fall.  Democrat candidates don't usually win without RI.

Oh despair, Trump will win.  : (

He's not, but he ran or claimed to be running to the left of the Democratic nominee in 2010.

Ah, OK. I should pay more attention to Rhode Island politics.

Whoa, I must've repressed Chaffee out of my mind because I thought Rhode Island's previous governor was Carcieri.

Why do you seem incredulous? Lincoln Chafee is more liberal than most Democrats, including the presumptive Democratic nominee for president.

The party fixers and establishment is right-wing Catholic. The voters are not anymore.

You're correct and I admit to being shocked by it. But we also have Gina Raimondo as our governor, the state's biggest anti-public education advocate as lt. governor (both of which defeated far more progressive options in their primaries) and a very conservative Speaker of the House. Hardly "left-wing" figures.

The state also hates Lincoln Chaffee and Raimondo who both endorsed Hillary. Was it retaliation? Who knows.

RI was an open primary, so that was really the main reason he won. It would have been interesting to see who would have won the states that were closed if they were open primaries.

Only Connecticut would've flipped.
