What is New York's like?  And I prefer partisan regstration of one kind for two very important reasons:

1) If you want to influence a party and make it "less bad" than you constantly bltch about, JOIN IT and help change it; become a part of the voter pool and conversation.  Help redefine what it means to be a Democrat/Republican!

I wish, but the (national) party left me. Tongue

I'm probably a flat-out RINO at this rate, since I do tend to vote for Republicans at the state level with the occasional Democrat and third party.

On the national level, I'm turned off by the Republican's shift to the populist right, but I am also turned off the by the VERY BITTER divisions in the Democratic Party as they combat between bland neoliberalism and agitated left-wing populism.

I feel like the guy who divorced his wife (The Republican Party) but still has occasional feelings for her. Sad

^ While I get your frustration, the "populist right" wants people like you and me to leave the GOP.  The only way to ACTUALLY combat that and to lessen their influence and create a political party worth being a proud member of is to have more Republicans like you.

However, everyone is obviously free to do whatever he or she likes!  Just my view on the matter.

Conservative (2017-)

Purchased a membership for the recent leadership election. I'm planning on letting it lapse next year.

What did your ballot look like?

[1] Scheer
[2] Bernier
[3] Leitch
[4] Obhrai

I would have marked Bernier first if he hadn't come out for a Canada-China FTA.

Conservative (2017-)

Purchased a membership for the recent leadership election.

Did you vote for Leitch?

Leitch has some admirable personal qualities but I found her very uninspiring as a candidate; her position on immigration was tepid at best - her campaign focused entirely on screening for values, refusing to discuss actually reducing immigration - and her views on social policy are far to my left.

In New York, in order to vote in a partisan primary you must have been a registered member of that party at the time of the previous even-yeared November election.

For your points, #1 I'm ambivalent about since, while I'd like to make the Democrats better rather than just complaining about them, it would make no sense at all for me to be a Democrat. As for #2, partisan voter registration data is beyond useless as a predictor of anything.

My sentiments exactly. I vote for candidates, not for parties.

Also, I see that you switched to being an Independent yourself? Tongue

Less because of political disagreements and more because I'm not a joiner. I'll admit that I'm not happy with the direction the Republican Party has taken, but I don't really want to be a member of any formal organization, including any political party no matter how much I agree with them.

Same here, Virginia does not require for me to register for a political party.

Technically none because Minnesota doesn't have partisan registration. However I've voted in the DFL primary every election since 2002.

I first registered as an Independent ('undeclared') and then switched in 2020 to Republican for the primaries and have not switched back and I don't think I will.
