July 1944: General MacArthur resigns from all his military posts to focus on his presidential campaign after he won the Republican nomination. He picks Governor Dewey as his running mate and offers John Bricker a top cabinet job. He faces popular incumbent President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his running mate, Senator Harry S. Truman.

Roosevelt: 487
MacArthur: 44

MacArthur's attempt to campaign on his war experience is undermined by the fact he resigned before the war was done, on the eve of the push to retake the Philippines no less! He is painted as an opportunist and FDR wins reelection with a somewhat bigger landslide than he would've against Dewey.

MacArthur would suffer a decesive defeat. FDR was the true hero of WW2 to many Americans, and unlike the general, he is proven leader in domestic and foreign policy. Successes on the battlefront in summer and fall 1944 made FDR almost unbeatable.

Franklin D. Roosevelt (inc.)/Harry S. Truman: 469 EV. (55%)
Douglas MacArthur/Thomas E. Dewey: 62 EV. (43.5%)
