Well it must be a coup then. I wonder how much of the military is supporting this then, enough to be successful?

The 1960 coup was conducted by army officers at the rank of colonels and below without the participation of generals.

The question is whether we're talking about a bunch of colonels (perhaps some junior generals), or senior generals being involved.

Well, that puts paid to any accelerated EU membership...

It's not like Turkey had a real shot before.

Could there be a relationship with the recent diplomatic turnabouts with respect to Russia and Syria?

I've heard about possible U.S. involvement, but don't have a source.

As much as I don't like Erdogan, the elected president should be respected.

Normally I'd agree, but one can argue that via his authoritatian methods Erdogan lost a democratic legitimacy.

Surely I'm not the only one troubled by Kerry's initial statement, in particular the lack of even a token mention of how democracy and the constitutional order of a country such as this should be respected?

I wouldn't be too shocked if the US had a hand in this. Wouldn't be the first time.

Never thought I'd ever support a (possibly)U.S.-backed coup.

well… let's hope that the turkish military is less awful than the egyptian military.

I hope so. One generalissimo Sissi in the region is enough.

Kerry's statement was pretty much "oh, I had to said something mild, guys"

Let's hope whoever's in charge is not another Kenan Evren.

All alliances and treaties will be upheld, according to the Peace Council (aka military rulers).

I love orwellian names.

Is there any indication who's on the "Peace Council", or the name is all we know?

So when can we expect to find Putin's fingerprints all over this?
Once again, Turkey can have their coups without any foreign help.

OK, the 1960 coup was clearly a wholly internal affair (again, by junior officers), but the 1980 coup had CIA fingerprints all over.

Coups in Turkey don't happen, generally, if the incumbent government has as much support as Erdogan has right now.

Haven't Menderes had a substantial support while outset? (I'm asking because I don't know).

Well, if they didn't by now, this is probably going to collapse. The question is, how long and how bloody the collapse will be.

Any chance of this being False Flag? Kkkk, but Erdogan is one of my favourite world leaders. Better than establishment pro-business and fascist pro-military that always went against Turkish people. But establishment prefers a leader with their trust than Erdogan as member of anti-imperialist axis with Putin and Assad.

Oh, now there's talk about restoring death penalty. Is Erdogan still going to apply to the EU?

No way this was a US-backed coup. Far too bumbling.

It's not like every coup backed by the US is successfull. Remember Venezuela?

At height of Turkish coup bid, rebel jets had Erdogan's plane in their sights

So close, lol.
