Who is the incumbent?  None other than Sally Kern, the outspoken anti-homosexual in the Oklahoma State House of Representatives.

Of course, Sally Kern is going to win this one, and I would support her in this race, but it's kind of funny to see some vague "progressivism" enter Oklahoma politics, against arguably one of the most controversial representatives in the country.

Alameda county California just elected a transgendered person as a judge, but they're a bit different politically.

The poor chap is running in the wrong set of zip codes. He should try ones starting with a "9" that are not that far from the ocean, and skip certain latitudes.

Transexuality is clearly a mental issue.

Yes, and the treatment is hormones and, if possible, surgery to enable people to live as best they can in their proper gender.

Kern will crush her. Oklahoma is not the best place for a transgendered to win an election. She will receive 1 vote =(

I'd vote for a bag of potato chips over Kern.

Is knowing someone personally really a reason to vote for said person?

To some it can be (not me, though I certainly would be more careful to avoid saying anything offensive that's personal, at least if it's a friend of mine, someone I don't like not so much haha).
But to some, even if the views are different, if they've known them for years, it's the whole "I can trust their judgment" thing (I guess).

In some cases.  I'd like the idea of personally knowing a member of Congress, even if that person is a douche.

State House? Eh... maybe not so much as anybody is qualified to run for that basic of basic offices.

Gender describes your personality, the way you interact with other people, and your perception of self within a framework of male and female. Sex is a set of primary (reproductive) and secondary (non-reproductive) physical attributes. In rare occasions, the two conflict, and contrary to putting those people in an institution (which is both expensive and misery-inducing--do you want your tax dollars paying for that), it is medically easier to change the secondary sex characteristics on the physical side and bring sex in line with gender. All attempts to make gender come into line with sex tend to fail tragically. Who wants that?

Yes! YES!!!!!

If only this woman (yes I consider her one StatesRights, or should I call you GayRightsTongue) had a chance in hell of winning in District 86.  My dear, I wish Sally Kern were outside the mainstream views of Oklahoma, but the fact is people like you and me don't a shot in hell of winning the position of dog catcher in District 86.....much less anywhere in Oklahoma.

Believe me, as someone who is thoroughly disgusted by the far right wing Republicratic pieces of sh*t who dominate Oklahoma state politics, nothing would make me happier than to see Sally Kern get her ass kicked by a transsexual come election day.  Sadly, there is only a .1% chance of that happening.
