Who was a better President?

Welcome to the first of a long series of matchups between a President and their immediate successor.  We will go in straight chronological order, although I will skip the people who served a miniscule amount of time in office (Harrison and Garfield).  Enjoy, and I vote Washington.

Washington, though Adams was a better president than his reputation suggests,

George Washington, and he deserves to be applauded for having set the non-Napoleonic precedent of voluntarily stepping down from office once his second term was completed.

However, in spite of his grievous error in supporting the Alien and Sedition Acts, I have immense respect for John Adams simply for sticking to his guns in the face of overwhelming public criticism in keeping us from going to war with France.  For that, he sacrificed any chance he might have had for winning a second term.
