It is something that has united conservative Republicans, moderates and even liberal Democrats: The New York State bail reform law that was passed and signed by the NY Legislature and Gov. Andrew Cuomo, that went into effect on Jan. 1, 2020, has caused problems. New York City and Albany and other cities in NY has seen crime increase. Is it correlated to this or is it due to Trumpnomics, the pandemic or other factors?

Should the NY legislators go back in the drawing board and model it after Chris Christie's NJ law----face it, Christie was a law and order Republican who was a reformist at the same time.

here's an idea (may need some work):
Let people "pay" someones bail just by showing up and vouching for them.  But if they commit a crime before their court date, you both go to jail.

This would still inevitably be a profitable endeavor but to a much smaller extent than the current anti-poor bail system.

I have to ask though if this crime spike is localized to New York, because I have not heard much data out of other US cities. Crime generally increases or lowers across the board.

Abolish bail altogether.

If someone is being charged with a crime and is deemed either too dangerous to not be detained pretrial, or is a flight risk, then they shouldn't eligible for bail.

If they are not a danger to the public and pose no flight risk, then they should not be detained pretrial at all.

I honestly always thought bail was pretty weird as an idea when I was in my Law Education class (which everyone fought to get into because the teacher was both great at teaching and is a great person)

if someone's a danger, don't let them out. If it's a nonviolent offense, why lock them up and demand money?

No, instead Chris Christie should move to New York and run for governor there.

This is not a major issue to anyone except the NY Post.
