Agreed. He could have tapped strongly into the undercurrent of resentment while soothing the fears of people who want a more traditionally experienced leader. It'd have been a wash.

If Bernie were up against Trump, I'd have voted for him-especially after the tapes came out. Too bad the Dems screwed him over. Idiots.

I don't think he would have. Trump would have still been considered the "real outsider", and more Republicans would have gotten in line with Trump, considering how far left Sanders is. Idiotic RacistsSmall Town America was always going to turn out hard for our supreme fuhrer.

No he wouldn't, just as Reagan wouldn't have defeated Carter in '76.

He's still seen as a well-meant, affable, but extreme man.

No, someone like Sanders actually winning will only come when the bottom completely falls out and the existing ideas fail to explain...just like Reagan.

Now 2020 could be perfectly ripe [but since history only rhymes, it'll have to be Sanders protege], assuming trump flounders as expected [ala Jimmy Carter].

I don't think Bernie would have won.

I think it was in the cards for Trump to win, and that's that.

Sanders would have been in a landslide win. Do you think the face of anti-trade deals would have lost to Trump in Michigan or Wisconsin?

Any sensible candidate would have won!

Yup.

The democrats needed a Bill Clinton or Obama type quality to beat the Donald.

Bernie was anti-establishment, and he was "sexual email" scandal-free, so it's a tough call.

Biden, Klobuchar, Sherrie Brown all would've held the rust belt. And the hatred amongst the right for Hillary was incredible that was all the GOTV Trump needed. I just can't Rs turning out as heavily to vote against a Klobuchar or Biden.

No, they needed a John Bel Edwards type on a larger scale and of course, more liberal.

That is only part of the story & is not a deciding factor. It also depends on how big you energize your own base & Hillary couldn't inspire shi*. It also depends on independents who broke heavily for Trump in the rust belt it seems! You can add cross over blue collar Dems who have been gutted by Trade deals!

I'd actually give him Georgia, especially with a young, exciting black running mate (Donna Edwards? Anthony Foxx?)

I feel for Bernie supporters tonight. I do. I've been there as a Ron Paul supporter, though even I knew that Paul would never win while Bernie would have. The story of the political revolution is a story still being written.

Why is economics such a polarizing issue among Libertarians in Atlas & in most GOP states?

Surely Civil liberties, Non-interventionist foreign policies, Socially Liberal & individual freedom issues are huge areas of commonality with progressives. I would say there is more in common with Progressives than Republicans.

We had a decent share of Ron Paul & Rand Paul supporters in the Bernie coalition who would never vote for Hillary!

Hopefully Ds recent flirtation w/ free trade ends tonight. Obama pushing for TPP in the middle of the election was so tonedeaf. And Hillary never repudiated NAFTA.

He would have yuge problems with VA, NV and maybe CO though.  Anyway, looks like Democrats got too excited about the New South too soon.

He would have lost CO? Yea his best state after VT in the country where he won 60% odd in a closed system which has one of the highest % of Young voters?

Or NV where he lost narrowly but tied or won the hispanic or white vote!

Very "Non-prejudiced" guess!

Bernie would have played better in Michigan and Wisconsin, but he would have been a bad fit for Virginia.

Definitely. Bernie would have won the Presidency and coattailed in a Democratic Senate. I don't know about the House though.

The thing about Virginia is that success there is so uncorrelated with the other swing states.  Kaine was a big mistake.

Virginia wasn't going to be a great state for Trump anyways, but even you give him, Bernie makes up for it by winning most of the Great Lakes states.
