Poll respondents also gave high marks to Haslam and U.S. Sens. Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker. Haslam's approval rating was just 53 percent, but his disapproval rate was just 15 percent, while more than 27 percent said they would wait and see.
The poll was conducted the week after Haslam, a former Knoxville mayor and business executive, took office on Jan. 15.
"He's starting out on pretty good footing," Geer said.
About 63 percent approved of both Alexander, a second-term senator, and Corker, who is four years into his first term.
Caroline Tippens, another law student and a moderate Republican, said both senators "tend to listen to their constituents and try to take in constituents' views while they're in the political climate of Washington."
"I think they're trying to do the best they can for the people of Tennessee," she said.
