What difference does it make whether those school board byelections are on the same day or not? They are in two totally different parts of the city, there are no cost savings i can think of...

- You can share advertising costs. One ad with information on both by-elections, instead of two separate ads.

While at the subject,
You might need to change the title since Winnipeg has 3 separate school board by-elections for Saturday June 11/2016.
If you are wondering, Winnipeg has 6+ separate school divisions.

Two of vacancies  were the results of the recent provincial election, and one was the result of a trustee being fired after moving to another school division.

- Louis Riel  - Ward 2 (Colleen Mayer, won the the St Vital seat for the PCs)
- St James James - Assiniboia - King Edward Deer Loge Ward (Scott Johnston, won the St James for the PCs)
- River-East Transcona - Ward 3 (Wayne Ritcher fired for moving to another school division)

Winnipeg started with 9 school divisions.

Not sure why Winnipeg has so many school division.
The only reason I think of was  The city of Winnipeg was amalgamated with the surrounding municipalities (ie. Fort Garry, North Kildonan, etc) in 1972, and the former municipalities kept their existing school districts. About 10 years ago the Manitoba Government did reduce the number of the school districts within the province, and Winnipeg went down from 9 to 6.

Turnout at school by-elections are very low. The last school board by-election paired without a city-council election had only 6%.

Two areas in Manitoba. Overlapping areas  Federally and Provincally.

Brandon Souris (Federal) was vacant - August 31/13 to Nov 25/13 - Merv Tweed resigned to take a position with OmiTrax
Arthur - Virden (Provincial) was vacant - Oct 18/13 to Jan 28/14 -  Larry Maguire resigned to run Federally in Brandon Souris.

The overlapping areas (SW Manitoba) was without representation just over 1 month.

Morris (Provincial) - vacant - Feb 12/13 to Jan 28/14 - Mavis Tailleu resigned her seat citing family and health reasons.
Provencher (Federal)- vacant July 9/13 to Nov 25/13 - Vic Toews resigned from politics.

For 4 1/2 months the overlapping areas (Morris, Niverville) was without representation.

You can say that during a Federal Election (or Provincial) there is no real representation. So if a Provincial Riding (or Federal) is vacant a riding (or area) is both vacant federally and provincially.

If anybody really cares.

School Board By-Election was held in Winnipeg Last Saturday.
Results:
Arlene REID  252
Alon WEINBERG 250
Jane PAGUIO 173
Marty GREEN 25
Total Votes = 701 out of 13,724 (Turnout 5.11%)
Cost of By-election around $100,000. Around $7 voters (If all voters voted)
Cost of each actual vote: $142.

2nd Place candidate thinks since he lost by 2 votes, that the winner should share the seat with him. He suggested that he would share the seat had he won by 2 votes.
