I love this idea, really, but I'm too cheap, at least at the moment.

Proposed Amendment. The bill will be re-written as follows:

1.  The Republic of Atlasia authorizes $8,000,000 per fiscal year to be put into research of the necessary technology of the space elevator.

2.  Five years from the passage of this bill, a representative of the research team will report back to the Senate with recommendations of funding for the construction of the structure.

I'm afraid that my previous objection still stands, whether we put in a lump sum of $40 million, or $8 million a year for several years.

This does nothing to quell the assertions that we shouldn't be spending our deficit on things like Space Elevator research. I thought you were a fiscal conservative Dan?

Yes, but I have a soft spot on technology - if the government has to spend money, i'd rather it were on whiz-bang stuff like a space elevator then on mundane social engineering welfare. I just wanted to make the bill more palatable.

If you want, I can field a bill reducing the welfare-to-work funding bit from 5 years to 4, just to be mean to the poor and kind to wealthy space contractors Cheesy.

Abstain. Love space travel, but we can't afford to spend too much at the moment....
