I don't know that he was ever planning to run, he made it clear he didn't really want to leave Montana for Washington D.C even while he flirted with running.

I don't doubt that his comments were part of the reason why he was no longer mentioned, but I believe the main reason he lost interest in running is because he engineered a takeover of the board of directors of a mining company that he is now the Chairperson of.
