Reagan won Wisconsin by nearly 5% in 1980 and just over 9% in 1984.

What President Trump ignores is that a bare win in Wisconsin in 2016 portends absolutely nothing in 2020. Here's the real problem, and I say this as a liberal: he utterly lacks the political savvy, the talent for disarming dissent, and the tendency to get what things piecemeal if necessary when getting everything is possible. For good reason Ronald Reagan had the nickname "the Great Communicator".

Donald Trump cannot say a kind word, so all that he can do is to aggravate the sensibilities of those who rejected him in 2016. He may have been effective in loading his nastiest decisions upon people who were never going to vote for him anyway, but even that has its limits.

Donald Trump is not Ronald Reagan, and he isn't close. But let's remember that a President who largely disparages his predecessor or the candidate that he defeated isn't solving any problems -- including the ones that his predecessor left behind.
