Funny story: On another message board I look at, mostly white conservative Southerners, they're also all worked up about this show because ... they think it will show white Southerners as the bad guy.

I have no doubt that it will, and they will also be (among) the heroes.

I understand that "Confederate" continues to receive a lot of criticism before the first episode is even filmed.

Which is curious, because with "The Man in the High Castle" there's currently a show in production which depicts America after the Nazis have won World War II. So, according to some people you can apparently do a show about Nazis ruling America, but not about a world in which the South has prevailed the American Civil War. Must have something to do with the fact that the Confederacy is a part of American history, while Nazism is not. Granted, in Germany it probably would be easier to do a TV show about the South winning the Civil War than Nazis winning World War II. It's still curious though, because at the end of the day the Confederates weren't worse than the Nazis.
it's because people like to tell other people that they are offended.  The Confederates winning/not losing the US Civil War is like the second most popular alt history fiction genre behind the Nazis winning.  It makes "bad guy" character development so easy.
Unlike the Nazis, you don't have large numbers of people denying the South's principal reason for infamy, that the CSA came into being for the express purpose of ensuring the continuation of race-based slavery. That's one reason why people are complaining. However, to be honest, the main reason is that people think if it weren't for this series, we'd at the minimum be getting 10 full episodes for Seasons 7 and 8 of GoT.

From the beginning the creators were talking about GoT as a 70 hour movie. With 73 episodes that will roughly be the case.

The reason they are doing GoT Seasons 7 and 8 as 7 and 6 episodes, respectively, is because they want to wrap it all up and they don't need 10 episodes a piece to do that since most of it is filler (S6 and S7), and GRRM hasn't finished the last book yet.

As for Confederate, some of the criticism is warranted, albeit somewhat reaching. Who knows what may have become of the CSA? I think it would have a caste system in the modern era, and would have gone through several expansion wars due to the loss of arable land and the need for new land. Maybe CSA-Mexican War, CSA Cuban annexation, KGC wanted those. It should be an interesting show regardless and it seems like they are doing a more anti-hero expose the slavers from within route with it.
