(not sure if this is the right place)

Many states that are Democratic strongholds (namely California, New Jersey, and others) were once Republican-leaning swing states. Even states like Montana and the Dakotas looked somewhat swingy. But what could the parties do differently to keep these states as swing states?

I have some ideas of my own, but I want to hear from you guys first.

Get popular Congressmen/Governors elected in "hostile" party states (ex. Schwarzenegger in CA), then get them to endorse the presidential candidate/campaign for them strongly?
