Kesk seems very strong in sparsely populated towns, so that this maps looks like a Kesk landslide. Tongue

That is, of course, because it is an agrarian party.

So, comparing with the polls, it seems that Kesk is the big loser of the day, with PS stronger than expected and SDP and Kok performing as the polls indicated. I don't know what coalition will be formed eventually, but it certainly won't be Kesk-led.

Will the next government probably end up like the Dutch government? Propped up by the crazies?

What I've heard it's probably going to be a Coaltion between the Social Democrats, True Finns, and National Coalition.

Didn't we say there's no equalizing mandates or anything?

Then how the hell does KD win a seat here? Huh

It's not the only result incompatible with D'Hondt, either.

How does this alliance work? KESK and KD count as one party for the seat total, then the top vote getters from both are elected? Or is there a middle step of dividing the two parties' totals from each other?

KOK must also have had a partner in North Karelia - KD again?

Both Swiss and German radio playing 'die Wahre Finne' as their main story today (I spent my day in a car). While there seems to be some degree of the usual slightly panicky reaction to anti-european parties doing very well, it's astonishing how much European political culture has evolved since the days of Haider's succeses. Of course, if you ask me, that's a development for the worse.

In France, absolutely nothing in the news (at least for what I've heard)...

In Denmark the news bureau for some strange reasons uses the Swedish name for True Finns - doesn't really make sense to use that name for a party that is against mandatory Swedish in schools! Besides that the reports has been pretty useless and the newspapers is having a hard time understading the Finnish political system especially the use of coalitions of many parties with quite different ideologies.

I was in a debating tournament in Lund this weekend. The Helsinki delegation consisted mostly of exchange students so they were subjected to a lot of bad jokes about them not being True Finns. Tongue

"die Wahren Finnen". "Wahre Finnen" without the article. Gotta love German's distinction between definite and indefinite forms Kiss (though the North Germanic languages do it too IIRC.)

To make things worse, that could mean either "true Finns" or "true fins". While the singular is different.

Poll: True Finns Now Have Biggest Support

The True Finns have become the biggest political party in Finland for the first time ever, according to a new opinion poll. The National Coalition party is in second position and the Social Democrats third.

According to the poll, undertaken by Taloustutkimus on behalf of a group of regional newspapers, 22.4 percent of people would vote for the True Finns if the election were held now. This compares with their support at the election of 19.1 percent.

The opinion poll was taken at the end of last week, so respondents knew at that point that the True Finns would not be joining the new government.

The National Coalition’s support stands at 20.6 percent, according to the poll, compared to their figure at the election of 20.4 percent. The Social Democrats, on the other hand, have seen their support fall from 19.1 percent at the election to 18.6 percent now.

The Centre Party’s support has also dropped. They got 15.8 percent of the vote at the election, while the poll now puts their support at 14.4 percent.

The Left Alliance and the Green League have both retained a similar level of support to that achieved in the election. The Swedish People’s Party and the Christian Democrats both saw their support fall by three tenths of a percentage point.

Taloustutkimus interviewed 1,376 Finns. The margin of error is 2.5 percentage points.

No the True Finns won't be joining the goverment, they weren't able to find an acceptable compromise with the National Coalition on the Portugese Bailout.

Good to know (especially for Portugal), but what will be the coalition in this case ? Kesk, greens and now True Finns are out, so a kind of Grand Coalition of most of other parties should be needed in order to get somewhere... Does Kok/SDP/SFP/CDs have a majority ?

Finland has gone the Rainbow route in the not too distant past. A 5 party-coalition with Kok/KD/RKP/SDP/Greens would hold 112 seats of 200. Messy, but probably doable if they can get the kinks worked out.

Can SDP go to PS and try to form a populist coalition with them, more Commies and KD? It would be interesting.
