Well, it all seems to be cloud to ground so every time it goes off, the lights flicker and I hear a click in my headphones...

But my computer and headphones are uber protected by a business class surge protector/power supply.

That does seem really unusual for SoCal this late in the year.  That kinda thing happens all the time here in the summer.  Most of our rain from May-August comes in the form of thunderstorms.

It swept up through Northern California too, where I experienced it.

They actually cut off comcast multiple times to make a verbal announcement -- I've never seen them actually use that emergency warning system before

Here it usually scrolls along the bottom of the screen, but if it's for your county, on ours anyway, a green screen comes up and says "Severe Thunderstorm Warning" or "Tornado Warning" and then tells you to tune into whatever channel for more info.

Yea that's apparently what happens 99% of the time according to my parents.  This ended the show I was watching and sounded like a vlogger who talked while a Spanish translation scrolled across a black screen

After years of taking grief, our local weathermen have taken to breaking in during comercials to tell us about the local bad weather instead of in the middle of The Office.  My kids told me the death threats were over the top, I told them to suck it up and watch things change or I'd kill them too.

That sounds like NOAA weather radio.  We get that too, but you have to tune into a certain channel.

It also cuts into the radio.

I remember a few summers ago I was working at Target and a large line of thunderstorms that had formed the night before in western North Dakota had stayed intact and was headed for us.  As the storm was coming in, we were all watching by the doors and we could see debris floating through the air even though it was completely calm outside.  Not 30 seconds later the tornado sirens (which were right outside the door) started blaring... everybody had to get inside and huddle in the middle of the building... there were distraught children and people running in from the parking lot.. and the power went out.

Luckily there wasn't very much damage right there, but there was a tornado touchdown about 5 miles west of town.  Still, the winds got to about 60mph, which when combined with downdrafts and stuff can do a lot of damage.

Bad as they're fried? No. Bad as in the storm is to close to be using them? Yes. Actually lightening is most dangerous on the edges of the storm. If you can hear thunder then you have the danger of being struck. Living in the lightening capital of the western hemisphere I can attest that electrical storms are nasty. We get them nearly every day this time of year.
