Buffalo DSA/Working Families Party-endorsed India Walton wins Early Voting 56-42 (Mayor Byron Brown)-3 (Le'Candice Durham), in quite an upset!

Brown has been Mayor of Buffalo since 2006, and often considered as a growing star in NYS politics, but has passed on opportunities such as running for Governor, Senate, or for President.

Republicans typically never run in the general election, however, India Walton has received the nomination from the Working Families Party. If she can't pull off the upset tonight, she'll face (presumably) Byron Brown in the November general election.

Personal anecdote, but, I've seen LOTS of support for Walton around the city, more than any opponent of Brown's in recent memory. Durham is viewed as a sort of spoiler candidate, gaining ballot access through her connections as a city hall staffer. Brown's campaign has relied on a lot of financial support from the typical billionaire/developer types, including some avid supporters of Trump.

I regret to inform you Buffalo's conservatives will likely be fleeing to cities such as Syracuse in the coming years.

Upstate is for radical socialists, NYC is for conservatives. We have always known this.

India's a LONGtime tenant organizer who's really rooted in the community. She's great.

Apparently he attempted to sleepwalk to victory, which might have been part of the reason for the upset.

Two things are great about this, a new socialist mayor and showing more how term limits are unnecessary

YES!!! I'm a new Buffalo resident and happily voted for India, even though I'd not consider myself anything close to a socialist. This is exactly why:

Apparently he attempted to sleepwalk to victory, which might have been part of the reason for the upset.

Byron did not participate in mayoral debates. Byron did not campaign. Byron's campaign site was basically, "hello, I am Byron Brown, the mayor of Buffalo". I could not tell you Byron's campaign platform because it did not seem to exist (I tried to look). One of the biggest political debates in Buffalo right now is over speed cameras (which is a whole thing that I won't get into). When the Common Council passed two bills trying to abolish them, Byron (1) got the first one voided on a technicality so he didn't have to take a position on the cameras, and (2) let the second one slide into law without signing it or vetoing it so he didn't have take a position on the cameras. Again, this is a huge issue in Buffalo, and rather than taking a side, he tried to cower.

Lot of triggered conservatives on social media right now about this news. Guess they “don’t live in fear” is only about COVID which can actually kill you.

This adds to the loads of evidence that elections are essentially decided by branding/messaging rather than ideology.
