11/30/18: Fmr Pres. George H. W. Bush Sr. Dead At Age 94

Wikimedia Commons

Former President George H. W. Bush is dead at age 94. Bush served as the 41st President of the United States from 1989 until 1993. Bush also served as Reagan's Vice President from 1981 to 1989, as well as the former CIA director, Representative from Texas, and the former UN Ambassador under Nixon. Bush was fairly popular when he was President due to the United States' performance in the Gulf War with Iraq and his leadership. However, Bush become unpopular due to his bipartisanship when he worked with the Democratic-controlled Senate and House when Bush was President. Bush raised taxes which went against a promise he made where he said that he would not do so.

Bush funeral was a uniting event where many important politicians including former President attended. President Sanders was not in attendance but his Vice President Amy Klobuchar did attend, as did Bernie's wife, Jane Sanders. Former President Obama, Bush Jr and Clinton also attended Bush Sr's funeral. George W. Bush Jr, the 43rd President and Bush's son gave a powerful eulogy which was uniting and actually praised American leadership and President Sanders. Jeb Bush, a former 2016 Presidential candidate and the former Governor of Florida also delivered a eulogy that was popular and powerful. Another eulogy came from former President Bill Clinton who ran against Bush and beat him in 1992. Clinton praised Bush and their friendship.

12/16/18: Arizona Rep. McSally Nominated To Replace Late Sen. McCain

Wikimedia Commons

Arizona Republican Governor Doug Ducey, who recently won re-election in November by a safe margin has nominated Arizona Representative Martha McSally (R-AZ) to replace Jon Kyl who was nominated to replace late Senator John McCain. McSally considered running for Senate in 2018, but decided against it when Sen. Jeff Flake announced that he would run once again. McSally has served as the Representative from Arizona's 2nd District since 2015 and has been very controversial, notably on health care and protections for patients with pre-existing conditions. McSally will serve until a Special Election takes place on November 3rd, 2020 on the same ballot as the Presidential and regularly scheduled election. McSally will be sworn in as the next Senator of Arizona, along will all of the newly elected Senators on January 3rd, 2019 when the 116th Congress is sworn in. McSally is already the frontrunner for the Republican nomination in Arizona's Special Senate Election in 2020. McSally has already announced that she will run in 2020 to fill the remainder of McCain's term.

1/15/19: Government Shutdown Begins, Deep Divide In America

Wikimedia Commons

A government shutdown has begun as there is not even discussion between the Sanders administration and Republicans in Congress. At first, Congressional Democrats and Republicans in Leadership Positions in both houses were negotiating but after a few weeks, the deadline came and all dialogue stopped. The Shutdown is over the deficit and government spending. Republicans in Congress, notably the House Freedom Caucus wants to dramatically lower the budget on key programs like Medicare and Medicaid. There was debate in the Senate, where Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) attacked President Sanders and his "socialist agenda." Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) attacked the President and has used the shutdown to the benefit of the Republican party. They have used this to turn public opinion against the President and his policies, which has only kind of worked as the President's approval rating has decreased. Many are questioning how long the shutdown will last and how this will effect essential workers and the United States' safety, as many key programs are not funded during government shutdowns.

2/9/19: Gridlock Continues, Negotiations Stalled

Wikimedia Commons

The government shutdown has reached its fourth week and the negotiations have stalled. Republicans led by newly elected Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) are requesting a huge cut for programs including Medicare and Medicaid which Republicans are calling "a much needed readjustment" , and a rise in military spending. President Sanders and Democratic Leaders in Congress, are refusing and will not give the Republicans anything. President Sanders has promised to veto any bill that will give more funds to the military budget. The President has called for more money and funds targeted towards veterans health care.

Negotiations are stalled for the foreseeable future and are unlikely to go anywhere soon. There are fears that this shutdown could last multiple weeks into spring. Essential and government workers are not getting paid and are suffering greatly. Many are still working without pay for the good of the nation, even if Congress is not its job. Veterans also are not getting funds that they deserve and millions of Americans are suffering throughout the nation, especially in poorer and minority communities.

3/10/19: Gridlock Ends, Deal Reaches To End Shutdown

Wikimedia Commons

Democrats, led by President Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) have reached a deal with the Republicans regarding the government and funding for the military and key programs. The Republicans were led by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI). The deal states that they will raise the military budget by 20 billion dollars and will leave funds towards medicare and medicaid alone. There will be no change in those programs. Both sides have agreed to the deal which will end the shutdown. However, many politicians on the far-right including the House Freedom Caucus, which is very conservative will vote against the deal. A few very liberal Democrats including Representative Ocasio Cortez (D-NY) and Representative Omar (D-MN) have said that they will vote against the deal.

President Sanders (I-VT) spoke - In Favor
I support this deal and today, have signed it into law. We need to end this terrible shutdown which has been dangerous and terrible for our great nation. Millions of Working Class Americans have suffered as a result.

Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) spoke - Voted Yae
I'm in favor of this deal as it is a win for the Republican Party and gives us much needed funds for the military which is crucial. I will continue to work for the people and will push a conservative agenda in Congress.

Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH) spoke - Voted Nay
This bill is terrible as it does not accomplish what we wanted it to. We did not lower spending to worthless and stupid programs like Medicare and Medicaid which are costly and accomplish nothing. This is a cowardly move by the Republican leadership and I urge my colleagues to oppose it.

3/15/19: President Sanders officially announces bid for 2nd Term

Wikimedia Commons

President Sanders as officially announced that he will run for re-election. It was expected that Sanders would run again and it is unclear Bernie's chances in 2020, against various Republican challengers, most of which have not announced yet. Many Republicans were waiting for Bernie to announce and it is expected that many will announce in the coming days and weeks. President Sanders remains slightly unpopular among the majority of Americans, though it is very slight due to the recent government shutdown where many independent voters blamed the President for his stubbornness.

In a speech in Burlington, Vermont, the President stated: "Today, I will be officially announcing my bid for a second term. It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve as President of the United States, something that I thought would never happen. We have done a great job and my administration has worked tirelessly for you, the American people. I am excited for more and hope that the American people will elect me once again and give me another chance to serve the people.......Thank you everyone. We will win this election next November in 2020! God bless you!"

3/25/19: Cruz, Rubio Announce Bids For President

Wikimedia Commons

This past week, three Republicans, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL)  have announced bids for President for the Republican Nomination in 2020. All three are serious contenders for the Presidency in 2020. However, Cruz and Rubio are considered frontrunners in this race for the nomination as they finished second and third in the 2016 Republican Primary, behind the eventual nominee, New York Businessman Donald Trump. Republican Primary Candidates likely waited to announce their bids for President, until President Sanders announced so they could attack him on the campaign trail as their opponent in the election. More Republican candidates are expected to announce in the coming weeks including some who ran in 2016 and others who didn't.

Excerpt From Sen. Cruz (R-TX) campaign speech:
Today, I am announcing my bid for President of the United States. I want to be your President to finish what we started in 2016. We need conservative policies in this country and need to get rid of our socialist President. We've had 12 straight years of Democrats, and we badly need a change, or else our country will fundamentally change.

Excerpt From Sen. Rubio (R-FL) campaign speech:
We need change in this country and a return to more conservative values. We are spending to much money and our leaders in Washington are trying to make America like Europe and the rest of the world. We are the United States of America, and as President I will keep this.

4/10/19: Pence, Kasich, Carson Announce Bids

Wikimedia Commons

This past week, three more Republicans, Gov. and 2016 Vice Presidential Nominee Mike Pence (R-IN), Fmr Gov. John Kasich (R-OH), and Retired Neurosurgeon Ben Carson (R-MI) have announced bids for President for the Republican Nomination in 2020. Carson and Kasich ran for President in 2016, while Pence did not do so, though Pence was picked by Businessman Donald Trump as his Vice Presidential nominee. The ticket went on to lose the general election to President Sanders. Of the three candidates, all are considered serious candidates. However, Pence and Kasich are considered frontrunners in this race for the nomination, especially Kasich who represents moderate Republicans and the moderate wing of the party as the party has moved to the right over the last few years. Now, 6 Republicans in total have announced bids for President, and more are expected to announce in the coming days and weeks.

Excerpt From Fmr Gov. Mike Pence (R-IN) campaign speech:
"Today, I am announcing my bid for President of the United States for the Republican Nomination. As the Governor of Indiana, I stood for conservative values and pushed an agenda for the people of my state. I am hoping to win the Republican Nomination and beat President Sanders in the general election."

Excerpt From Fmr Gov. John Kasich (R-OH) campaign speech:
"Today, as the former Governor of the state of Ohio and a proud citizen of the United States of America, I will be announcing my bid for the Presidency of the United States. I ran in 2016, and unfortunately did not win the nomination. I am hoping to win the nomination and return the values of family values that Republicans used to stand for and I want to bring this back to the party."

Excerpt From Neurosurgeon Ben Carson (R-MI) campaign speech:
"I am announcing my bid for President of the United States. I am proud to be a conservative voice that will fight for the people. We need an outsider in Washington as the President and not a socialist like President Bernie Sanders. We will win this nomination and the Presidency, next November!"

4/16/19: WikiLeaks Founder Julian Assange arrested in London

Wikimedia Commons

WikiLeaks Co-Founder Julian Assange has been arrested in London. Assange has been under the protection of the Ecuadorian government and has been in their embassy in London for the last seven years. Assange was charged with espionage as his company, WikiLeaks released DNC emails illegally. There was a discussion that he might be prosecuted in the United States, but Attorney General Keith Ellison has hinted that he won't extradite Assange. Assange and WikiLeaks have been accused of being Russian puppets and have apparently spied on the U.S. Government.

5/1/19: Gardner, Walker, Haley Announce Bids

Wikimedia Commons

Recently, three more Republicans, Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO), Gov. Scott Walker (R-WI), and Fmr Gov. Nikki Haley (R-SC) all announced bids for President in 2020 for the Republican nomination. Walker ran for President in 2016 and dropped out due to poor fundraising and bad debate performances in the debates. As Governor of Wisconsin, Walker has had a bumpy ride and is currently slightly unpopular. Out of the three, Gardner is the most serious candidate, considered a possible frontrunner in the race. While, Haley is considered a rising star in the Republican party ready to make an impact and paly a large role in the party going forward.

Excerpt From Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO) campaign speech:
"Today, as the Senator from the great state of Colorado, I will be announcing my bid for the Presidency of the United States. As the Senator from Colorado, I have worked hard for our great state and have been a bi-partisan senator throughout. I am proud of my work and will continue to do so as your President, if elected.."

Excerpt From Gov. Scott Walker (R-WI) campaign speech:
"I am officially announcing that am once again running for President. Four years ago, we did not win but we ran a tough campaign and inspired many. This time will be different and we will win the primary and the general election against our radical liberal socialist President. We will win."

Excerpt From Fmr Gov. Nikki Haley (R-SC) campaign speech:
"Today on this beautiful day in Charleston, South Carolina, I am announcing that I am running for President. I served honorably as the Governor from South Carolina and am proud of my work. I am excited for this journey ahead and will work hard for the American people, to the best of my ability."

5/25/19: GOP House Launches Investigation into First Lady Jane Sanders

Wikimedia Commons

The House of Representatives led by Oversight Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) has announced that they will investigate First Lady Jane Sanders. Jordan is also the founder and former Chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, which is very conservative and has pushed the Republican party far to the right. The committee announced that they will investigate the First Lady and her role in a land deal as the President of Burlington College in Vermont in 2010. Jane Sanders resigned under pressure from the college board of trustees after it became apparent she was not able to secure the commitments for the donations she’d promised.

This investigation is considered silly by a large percent of Democrats in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, as well as the Executive Branch, where President Sanders has made a statement against the investigation. Many moderate Republicans in both chambers of Congress have called the investigation "worthless" and don't think it is rooted in anything. House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) has stated that he will not take part in the investigation but will let it continue.

President Bernie Sanders Press Release:
"This investigation is utterly ridiculous. My wife and our great First Lady Jane did nothing wrong and shouldn't be investigated. I am against this and urge the House to put an end to this ridiculous investigation to dig something up on me and my administration."

First Lady Jane Sanders Press Release:
"This investigation achieves nothing and is only trying to take us down. As First Lady, I have tried to help the people and made America a better place. As the President of Burlington College, I tried to help students in any way I can. I didn't do anything that warrants this and am deeply upset about this.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA):
This investigation is necessary to see what the First Lady did and if she did anything illegal. We are trying to make sure that everything was right and want to make sure that there aren't any abuses of power by the White House and by the President and the First Lady. We are doing this for the American people and not for one person.

6/15/19: Hong Kong Protests Over Reform

Wikimedia Commons

Peaceful Protests have broke out with huge crowds of protestors in the city in Hong Kong, which is part of China that gets some independence from the Totalitarian nation. The territory was part of the British Empire for nearly 150 years until July 1st, 1997, when it was officially transferred to China. The deal that was made was that Hong Kong could have some support of independence from China for 50 years, and then China could do what it wanted with the city and surrounding areas. China has taken dramatic steps over the last few years to incorporate Hong Kong into China and to limit its rights. This is what prompted the protests in Hong Kong, which took over the city. The police were overwhelmed and mostly responded peacefully, though some were violent. As a result of these protests, 2 people died and an unknown number were imprisoned.

Even tho you’re a dem? You wouldn’t vote for Bernie? I’m moderate/center-left, I identify as independent and Kasich is a good candidate in my eyes, but you’re a dem, and you wouldn’t vote for Bernie? Surprising
Oh yeah, 100%. I'm a moderate/centrist too. Fringe on being an independent. I very much dislike Bernie and do like Kasich.

7/10/19: Trump Officially Announces He Will Not Run in 2020

Wikimedia Commons

2016 Republican Presidential Nominee Donald Trump has announced in a tweet that he will not run for President in 2020. He had speculated that he might want to run for President in 2020 and had criticized fellow possible rivals like Ted Cruz and others. Trump has said that he will not endorse a candidate and has said that he disapproves of President Sanders and has called him "the worst President in American history and it isn't even close." Trump in 2015 shocked people by running, and shocked even more by winning the 2016 Republican Nomination. Trump did go on to lose to now President Sanders in a close election, but his campaign was a shock to many and has went down as one of the greatest stories in American politics.

Sen. Rubio: 21.2%
Undecided: 14.2%

Gardner: 7.2%

8/1/19: First Republican Primary Debate:

Wikimedia Commons

Location: Charlotte, North Carolina
Winners: Kasich, Cruz
Losers: Pence, Gardner

Highlights: The First Republican Debate was not eventful or significants as most of the attention was centered towards President Sanders and his administration. The candidate spent a lot of time criticizing the President and what he had done as President. However, there were some interesting moments between the candidates including some attacks directed at the frontrunner Texas Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX). Cruz spent a lot of time attacking fellow Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) on his pro-immigration stance and his attempts to negotiate with former President Obama and now President Sanders. Cruz said that Rubio is pro immigration and is "just wrong on the issue." It was a contentious moment, where Rubio tried to defend himself and his stance. However, this fell flat and Rubio seemed unprepared to take on Cruz. Another interesting moment was when the moderators asked the candidate about former Republican Nominee Donald Trump and his presence in the party. All of the candidates tried to not directly attack Trump but all showed displeasure towards the 2016 Nominee and tried to distance themselves from him. Ohio Former Governor John Kasich (R-OH) stepped in and directly attacked Trump, in contrast to his other fellow candidates. Kasich called Trump, a "cancer" on the party and his remarks and demeanor are "dangerous for America." Kasich also attacked Cruz, and said that we should be trying to unite and not shame politicians for trying to compromise with the other side. Polls showed that Kasich came out of the debate as favorable and was seen as the main winner of the debate, which surprised many.

8/15/19: Extreme Floods in India

Wikimedia Commons

India has been hit with extreme floods that has killed at least 200 people and has displaced over 1 million people. This has been one of the worst floods to date in world history and has been a disaster. The Indian government is not prepared to deal with the situation and this will only make India situation with solution worse. This has brought back talk about Climate Change and the deadly effect that it has. President Sanders has said that we need to work on Climate Change before the situation gets worse. The President said that he plans to meet with world leaders on the issue and what we can do to change it. Bernie also wants to work on some type of bill on Climate Change, though which seems unlikely due to the Republican controlled Congress in both houses.

9/13/19: Second Republican Primary Debate:

Wikimedia Commons

Location: Orlando, Florida
Winners: Haley
Losers: Carson, Cruz

Highlights: The Second Republican Debate was very eventful compared to the First. Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley (R-SC) came out as the big winner. Many candidates attacked each other including some personal attacks on each other. Texas Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) spent a lot of time attacking fellow Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) and said that he was barely "a Republican" due to his stances on immigration. Cruz attacked Rubio's "bi-partisan record" and said that Rubio's stances are ridiculous and terrible for his state. Cruz's attacks fell flat and seemed out of touch. Cruz lost the debate and came out as the biggest loser in the debate. Rubio also didn't have a great debate performance, though it wasn't a big loss or anything like that. As previously mentioned Nikki Haley won the debate as she got her point across well and seemed like a safe choice. She had a powerful statement, where she attacked both Cruz and Rubio, and their hateful speech towards each other. Another candidate that had a poor performance in the debate was Ben Carson, who stumbled with his words and made many mistakes throughout the debate. Carson tried to explain his stances on many issues, though they didn't make any sense to voters and he seemed dumb.

Wikimedia Commons

The College Admissions Scandals involving Felicity Huffman, Lori Loughlin, and others has shaken many people in the United States including those in power. This scandal came out a few months ago but those involved have been given their punishments, which seem very light and were less then expected. Those individuals listed lied about extra extracurriculars and had people take the ACT/SAT tests for them. This is a huge scandal that has shaken up colleges and people in every sector of government. President Sanders has responded to this scandal by discussing white privilege and the need for reform in many areas of American society. Those individuals listed have been sent to jail for short sentences which Sanders also spoke about and he said that jail sentences for crimes committed white and black people must warrant the same or similar punishment or jail sentences. Sanders spoke about injustices in American society and spoke about the need for criminal justice reform in the United States
