I personally don't really consider East Europe part of "the West" either. There is too much difference in cultural heritage.  Starting with the split of Roman Empire, then the Great Schism and finally Communist Bloc era.  There are some countries with more interchange throughout history and other countries that are in transition, but I'd still keep it separate.
