Is there a viable scenario where PMF wins the presidency, most likely in 1969 since he won't beat de Gaulle? Assuming that somehow he's convinced to abandon his opposition to direct election. Though the Gaullist bench strength and '68 or an alt-equivalent would probably make it difficult.

From what I understand, it seems like '69 would've been his best chance, but he was too stubborn.  Frankly, if the left had been able to select a unifying candidate, it would've been him (or Mitterand).  But yeah, it'd still be difficult.

An alternate scenario is where de Gaulle lives another few years so a regular election is held in '72, which allows decompression from '68. No idea on who the Gaullist candidate would be in said scenario, mind you. VGE hammered Mitterrand as a dinosaur IRL, any younger Gaullist would do the same. Things would get really interesting when the Trentes Glorieuses go up in smoke in his hypothetical first term.
