Politics has become a parody of itself.  The best, the brightest, and the bravest are not seeking public office.  When the choice is between what is right and what is popular, what is popular wins out.

To say what today's Republicans are is conservative is a joke.  This is a party that would:

  • Criticize Richard Nixon as being a tree hugger.
  • Blast Reagan for spending too much (under him as Gov, California state spending increased by 177%).
  • Hammer Barry Goldwater as too liberal on social issues (actually Ann Coulter said he lost in '64 because he was "too liberal").
  • Attack Eisenhower as anti-American for cautioning against the Military Industrial complex

4. A delusional, racist old whose main achievement is voting "no" on every bill passed since 1787

The GOP field is pretty much either Mormons or total kooks.

It's good to see the GOP field is now properly representative of its electorate.

What's happened to the GOP?  It's been taken over by social conservatives, running almost exclusively on those points whilst the country as a whole is becoming progressively more socially liberal, as well as less religious.  It's a losing combination with which the GOP can forget about any future presidents.  For the GOP to garner another president 1 or 2 things need to happen; a very weak democratic candidate and/or the GOP switches focus from the Christian-social-values platform.  That being said, the GOP has no chance in the 2012 election, all the polls suggest this.

Compilation of all the polls as compiled on wikipedia.  Being generous, I've marked a state going for Obama ONLY IF, the state has gone democratic the past 2 elections AND the polls suggest that Obama is favored over any republican OR the state has gone for Obama in 2008 AND the polls suggest that Obama is favored.  I've marked a state for republicans if the state has gone republican the past 2 elections OR the state has gone for Obama in 2008 but the polls suggest that a republican is favored.
