MOSCOW - (KRT) - As authorities struggled to restore calm in eastern Uzbekistan on Saturday after a bloody uprising a day earlier, President Islam Karimov defended the decision by his troops to quell the violence by firing into a large crowd, killing up to 300 people by some estimates.

The uprising's toll became grimly clear at dawn Saturday, as soldiers were seen by witnesses pulling up four trucks and a bus to load the bodies of

men, women and children shot to death

by Uzbek troops in the eastern city of Andijan.

ah, so you love democracy and hate brutal regimes like Saddam's? Oh yeah, don't whine about Hugo Chavez ever again.

I heard an analyst on the BBC say that f**cker is toast. I hope they do a Ceausescu on him and hope Jake cries if his precious hero is murdered.

DEATH TO KARIMOV!

I'm suprised you aren't a fan BDTR, seeing how most of those he has arrested have been Muslim extremists.

I actually agree with you for once. As long as its a democratic and free government that comes out of this I will be happy. The only problem I can see is whether a new government would still allow US troops in Uzbekistan.

The new government will be the same Muslim extremists that BDTR hates. Watch and see.  Karimov is like Saddam, a secular dictator. The same things BDTR is harping on in his old Iraq threads about Islamic radicals is going to actually happen here. Little Iran will finally be born if Karimov falls.

These people aren't Islamists, at least not all of them. Islamists don't participate in peaceful, unarmed protest. There'd just be crazy suicide bombings if that was it. Saying only Islamists could take over is like when people said if the regimes in the Philippines and Greece fell the communists could take over. But the regimes fell, and the communists did not take over.

Neither of those countries are similar to this situation. When the Shah fell, what replaced a repressive dictatorship? None other than our first radical Islamic Republic.  I tihnk the one thing we can agree on is that a repressive dictator is better than another radical Islamic country.

Actually there was TWO revolutions in Iran. First the Shah was removed, but then Khomeini overthew the new government that was looking at being a secular democracy.

The odds favor a pro-U.S. regime, if Karimov loses. Kiki

Ok, just don't pretend like you think "democracy" is so important LOL (same goes for our beloved commander-in-chief).
