Notable for environmentalism, calling for the resignation of Nixon during Vietnam and getting 20 percent in the 1974 primaries, destroying Pat Robertson's career and beating Shirley Temple in his first race. Became a democrat in his later years.

I had no idea he was still alive until now. Not a lot of '70's figures still live.

I had forgotten the man was alive until this thread was opened. Who are the last figures that served in congress during that decade, barring the current president?

Two figures that slipped past my mind, though Grassley is pretty ancient.

There are still two candidates from the 1972 democratic primary alive today, Walter Fauntroy and Fred Harris. I can't imagine any 60s candidates have lasted this long.

He never denied the holocaust pal.  A simple trip to wikipedia outs that as a political smear.

According to Wikipedia Daniel J. Evans ran as a “favorite son” in the 1968 primaries and he’s still alive at 98

The highlighted part is true.

Still, McCloskey was pro-Palestine and anti-Israel.  His close pal was Rep. Paul Findley (R-IL), who was another anti-Vietnam war Republican who called himself "Yasir Arafat's Best Friend in Congress".  He lost his Congressional seat to Dick Durbin in 1982.  Both of those guys were anti-AIPAC, and they were supporters of the survivors of the USS Liberty, a cargo ship that was bombed by Israel in the 6 day war.  Israel apologized and said it was an accident and a mistake, but the survivors of the USS Liberty generally did not believe that.  They were honored long after the fact, and McCloskey was there.

McCloskey (and Findley, for that matter) were genuinely anti-war.  I respect that, as much as I don't agree with their position on Israel and Palestine.  I take a nuanced view on McCloskey, but he's a soft FF with flaws.
