When there is so much power in being offended (as there is in modern society), it is only to be expected that people who bring their offendedness into political discourse will have a voice that outstrips their actual representation. The 'alt-right' and the 'SJW left' were irrelevant, but they are loud enough that people are deluded into thinking they matter. Paradoxically this actually causes them to be relevant.
For me, an important step in healing our nation's political discourse is being able to move beyond this deleterious influence. Being offended is not an argument, and those people who profit off an eternal state of being offended should not be granted the privilege to dictate what we do.
