I hope that it isn't legalized, proponents of it don't have a good reason for it.

Do you have a good reason for keeping it illegal and tossing people in jail over it?

Personally I don't care about its legal status, as long as it stays illegal in my state. I've never been of the idea that legalizing drugs is a good idea. Also, I do support legalization for medical purposes, but only medical purposes. I'd honestly just hope that people are discouraged from using it, and there are better ways to do that than imprisoning people. I would support rehabilitation for users of it, and that would gradually put them on a path to a better life. I may oppose legalization, but that doesn't mean that I support throwing users in prison. People who sell it illegally, however, they should probably be imprisoned. My position is that rehabilitation is a better solution than imprisoning people or letting them run around with gateway drugs.

Since alcohol is more dangerous and more addictive, it should be illegal then too, right?

Ok. How about you first explain why it is you think marijuana should be illegal? All you've said so far in this thread is that you want it banned. Because you are the one proposing government intervention here, the onus is on you to establish why marijuana is somehow more dangerous than other drugs like nicotine and alcohol (unless you want those banned as well).

I already have one that does and I haven't been caught yet. Mostly because I don't smoke before work.

How frequently do they test?  That stuff stays in your system for weeks, months if you use it regularly.

Lol yeah, Id be lucky to be clean in just a month after cessation. Testing Upon hiring, upon promotion, and if there is suspicion following a work vehicle accident or other evidence of use at work. I purposely drive my private vehicle for work travel so the only chance I have of getting tested is if I get force promoted if the other assistant city attorney gets fired. And if that happens and Im force promoted and then tested I should be able to leverage my position to get a pass by enrolling in addiction classes. I do so much work for so many department heads at this point that they realistically couldn't fire me if I agreed to the drug counseling and future testing.  This year Im walking us through a rewrite of the entire City Code, spearheading the local casino regs, foreclosing on about 150 vacant lots, and transferring about 300 properties into our landbank (and that's just the massive projects) so they are dependent on me now for a lot.

And also, why you won't let people decide that for themselves. I think weed is absolute sh**t and used by dumbass fools and fools only, but that doesn't mean they don't have a right to use it.

Never had any interest in trying weed, although I would support its legalization as long as it doesn't result in people stinking up every damn public place.

S019 doesn't even believe in letting the accused out on bail. The only thing he thinks people should be able to decide for themselves is how late in the third trimester they want to have an abortion. IIRC he wanted to cap the number of "watermelon knives" someone could own, prohibit grandkids from painting their granny's porch without an occupational license, impose a mandatory FIVE YEAR waiting period for gun purchases, and says no one is allowed to voluntarily pray in public if he can see them doing it.

Huh. Somehow this fairly straightforward question went unanswered.

Alright I will answer.
I am not S019 so I can’t pretend to represent his views, but I do want recreational marijuana to stay illegal (ironic given my State)
First, legalizing recreational marijuana will create more problems. We already have to deal with the serious effects of alcohol and nicotine, marijuana is not something else we should be adding on top of these problems. Marijuana isn’t as physically dangerous as these drugs, but it is psychologically addictive and still has the easy ability to ruin lives. In fact, marijuana arguably has led to numerous lower income communities being devastated. Even here in Denver, it seems to have already caused several problems.
Now these apply to alcohol and nicotine as well. The only reason I don’t want to ban alcohol and nicotine is because they are already so ingrained into our culture, banning them would be even more difficult to do/borderline impossible. The problem is, if we legalize marijuana, we allow it to get to that point where we can’t feasibly ban it no matter what.
Marijuana is not more dangerous than alcohol and nicotine, but it is more controllable. In an ideal World, we would ban alcoholic beverages and cigarettes as well, but those are currently too ingrained in our mainstream culture to effectively ban. FWIW, I strongly support higher taxes and more regulations within these industries. Furthermore, arrested people for possession and imprisoning them is counterintuitive. We should be ideally sending as many consistent marijuana users to rehab centers as possible.
And none of this applies for medicinal marijuana, which needs to be legalized everywhere (with regulation)

By the time marijuana is legalized, I'll have too many responsibilities to enjoy it.

Did you know that we already have to "deal with" the effects of marijuana? It is extremely easy to acquire. Prohibiting a drug does not get rid of it — and it's difficult to imagine the scale of heavy marijuana use that would be required to ruin as many lives as the criminal penalties assigned to marijuana already have.

Marijuana is also deeply ingrained into our culture. Have you ever walked around a college campus on that hallowed day in April? Have you ever been to a Grateful Dead concert? A majority of American adults have tried it, it's pretty well ingrained.

Marijuana is not more dangerous than alcohol and nicotine, but it is more controllable.
Huh Citation needed!
