Based on the discussions in Leonardo's post, I've come up with two scenarios for an ASOIAF game.
The Blackfyre Rebellion (Early 196 AC) - Daemon Blackfyre, bastard son of King Aegon IV Targaryen, has risen up to claim what he feels is his birthright - the Iron Throne - after the dying King legitimized his bastards on his deathbed. King Daeron II Targaryen, Aegon IV's true born son, is not going to give up the Iron Throne without a fight. With news of the bastard's uprising filtering through the Seven Kingdoms, most nobel houses have yet to declare their allegiance in the conflict. King Daeron II hopes that the prestige of the Iron Throne will keep the realm together, while Daemon hopes a few key victories in battle, himself a great warrior, will build a tide that no King could stop.
Key characters:
Daemon Blackfyre, pretender to the Throne, a bastard of King Aegon IV Ser Quenten Ball Ser Aegon Rivers, a bastard of King Aegon IV King Daeron II Targaryen, King Prince Baelor Targaryen Prince Maekar Targaryen Brynden Rivers, a bastard of King Aegon IV Lord Leo Tyrell Lord Damon Lannister
The War of the Five Kings (298 AC) - While rumblings about the legitimacy of King Robert Baratheon's heirs are quietly spreading across the Seven Kingdoms, the King dies, injured in a hunting accident by a wild boar. The arrest of Tyrion Lannister by Catelyn Stark over claims of an attempted assassinate of her son, Bran, ignites the tensions of the realm, catapaulting the Seven Kingdoms into war. Joffrey Baratheon, the seemingly rightful heir to King Robert, sits on the Iron Throne while is uncle, Stannis Baratheon, tries to exert his own claim. Robert and Stannis' younger brother, Renly, is also rumored to be building support for his own claim to the Iron Throne while secessionist fires in the Iron Islands and the North burn brighter each day.
Key characters:
King Joffrey Baratheon King Stannis Baratheon, pretender to the Throne, brother of King Robert Lord Renly Baratheon, brother of King Robert Lord Eddard Stark of Winterfell Lord Tywin Lannister of Casterly Rock Lord Mace Tyrell of Highgarten Lord Balon Greyjoy of the Iron Islands Lord Hoster Tully of the Triden Lord Roose Bolton of the Dreadfort
I think either of these scenarios, while not being too divergent from ASOIAF storylines, gives us ample opportunity to make these our own and craft our own tales.
