Why did Sanders vote against the DREAM Act?

For someone who is proud of his consistency, I think that's important to know.

I'm surprised he didn't explain himself when he was called out on it at the debate.

Also, why in the world did Sanders say at the PBS debate that he's against Obama's immigration policy? Is he either:
 1. ignorant about Obama's executive order, on relief for illegal immigrants from deportation, that's facing a SCOTUS challenge right now?
 or
 2. is he against it, like how he voted against the DREAM Act?

Sanders is against the deportations of children fleeing violence in Central America.  When Hillary Clinton defended these deportations, she said that they "send a message" to the families of these children that people smuggling is dangerous.  It was a disgusting rebuke of humanitarianism and one of the many bad answers Clinton gave in the debate.

In December 2010, Sanders voted for the Dream Act.

Sanders is telling the truth but not the whole truth when he says he voted against it because it created slavery like conditions.

That is one of the reasons he gave at the time. The thing is though, a lot of Latin Americans want to come here and be slaves for some reason.

The other reason he gave is that we don't have enough jobs and don't need anymore people competing for the ones we already have. He won't admit that during this campaign though.

He voted against it because it would take away jobs of existing Americans and drive down wages. He won't admit that, though, because he wants to court the Latino vote.

He didn't vote against the Dream Act, just to be sure.  He did vote against the immigration reform bill in 2007.
