Oh yeah, today's Columbus day. So glad almost no one celebrates it anymore.

Well it depends on who you ask.  People in academy who read real books and not fairy tales have probably know the guy was a piece of garbage for decades.  When I have kids I will let them believe in Santa Claus and a benevolent Columbus.  But when they get to a certain age I hope the school system starts teaching them real history.

When people realized he didn't discover jack sh*t, instead he stole in from the Native Americans already settled there, then gave their women syphilis and took advantage of the them in general. He's hailed as this hero because he was the first white English man to discover America.

It was an otherwise great point that was ruined by a heroic gaffe.  This is something I've seen 20RP12 do before... boldly and forcefully stating factually incorrect information.   A few days ago we had this little exchange.

It is a FACT that a majority of black teens in America listen to rap and hiphop. There's not many white kids at Lil Wayne or 50 Cent concerts.

I just wanted to say that the data I've seen seems to indicate the majority (60-80%) of hip hop album sales are to white consumers

For some reason two seconds on the Google machine is two seconds some posters cannot spare.

He was also, at one point, stripped of his post and imprisoned for being too abusive and genocidal. In his lifetime.

Genocidal perhaps, but maniac?  He might not have been the smartest man, but he seems reasonably levelheaded.

You want genocidal maniac look at Pizarro.

The spread of disease wasn't his fault, it was a natural consequence. Even back when I learned of the heroic Colombus, they admited that the Vikings discoverd America first.

But obviosly, back in FDR's day (He was president when Colombus Day was made a holiday) and before, heroic Colombus was the norm.

Starting the largest genocide in history is a pretty big accomplishment.

I would like to point out yet another mistake with this post. Syphilis came from America, not the other way round. Though it's more forgivable than your other hilarious mistake.

What can I say, Voyage a la Bout de la Nuit is definitely on my top 30 or 50 or whatever list of books to take on a desert island with me.
