Four years have passed since the election of Martin Van Buren. Tariffs have been lowered, the National Bank has been replaced by an Independent Treasury system, and Van Buren has resisted calls by many to annex Texas, much to the chagrin of pro-slavery Democrats. Running against their own incumbent President are expansionist Lewis Cass and moderate James Buchanan. Some, fearing deadlock at the convention, are considering the nomination of Governor and former Speaker of the House James K. Polk, another Jackson protege. Which will you choose?

So Van Buren is the peace candidate, Cass (and Polk) the war candidates, and Buchanan is pretty pro-peace himself...

Van Buren, easily. The other choices are all pretty horrible.

I see no reason to kick Van Buren out of office.

Won't be voting for him in the general, but Van Buren for his anti-slavery stance.

Both guys (Clay & Birney) were nominated unanimously.
