This is kind of hard to do since the definitions of left and right have changed a lot over the past 50 years, but I'll try using a more modern definition.

He opposed partial-birth abortion

Opposing partial birth abortion is more common sense than leftist.  Not trying to be rude, but if you support it, you're a jackass.
