BTW, wasn't he always going to resign around now? He'd only committed to a relatively short stint IIRC.

Well, if he wins the primary by some twist of fate Obama will lose handily. But I don't see that happening.

I figured he would resign around 2012, regardless if Obama won or not. Not this early though, if he decided to do this now then why take the job?

I'd seriously consider supporting him if he actually decides to run. He'd sure give Obama a run for his money.

Surprise Holy cow he is really serious. Run Hunty Run!

Seriously this will make it much more interesting, splitting the base with Romney. Plus, I think he's all around a decent guy, he'd also make a good SOS

Pretty much. As his McCain 2008 endorsement shows, Huntsman isn't as friendly with Romney as I would have expected. I wonder how much he would take of Romney's "base".

Well he's Mormon, and utah's polls show him constantly winning 2-1. So There's Idaho and Utah as a start. Cuts romney's support in half in Nevada. Hurts him in Colorado and makes the caucus competitive.

Cite? Or I am editting the above post into a modified 2012 rendition of the Dean Scream. Tongue I think there is just enough states to make it work. Wink

No way he makes it through the powerhouses of Palin and Huckabee, but I'd love to see him jump into the race. We'll see.

I thought of that, too, especially if they have a late primary. It could be the perfect set up for 2016.

His father is a billionaire.  How much $ does Jr. have?  Will he be completely self-funding?  It would be amusing if the three candidates who end up spending the most $ in the GOP primary are Huntsman, Romney, and Trump (three candidates not well loved by the base), because they all tap into their personal fortunes.

He's definitely running imo, http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2011/02/03/huntsman-to-speak-at-jobs-forum-in-washington/

but what is he thinking?  I don't understand his path to the nomination.  The Whitehouse political team has already shown its willingness to embrace him

I personally think that is just positioning for 2016. If he wins a few states, he'll inevitably be considered again. But getting to the nomination is probably impossible this time around.

I'm not completely sure he's running, to be honest. Senate also seems like a possibility, but he really wants to get his name out there that he is a potential presidential candidate. A marketing strategy, perhaps?

I think he is running for 2016.  I know the runner-up theory has drawn a lot of skepticism in the blogosphere but it's yet to really be disproven by any case save the son of the previous president/governor of the second largest state in the country.  (And of course, Jeb Bush too is very plausible as a 2016 nominee running the first time.)  Look, even as weak as the GOP field is, the frontrunners now were all national candidates in 2008.  I think Huntsman could be running in 2012 with the expectation that he won't win the nomination and Obama will likely be re-elected anyhow.

With his experience, he has a strong shot at the VP at best, if he impresses in the debates.

But I think Orrin Hatch might be getting too old as well.
