I really hate the Patriot Act......we none of us Patriots before it existed?

Some of us more than others.

In your view are there more now that we have a Patriot Act?

I don't think the name has anything to do with that.

Care to dispute or explain the numbers in the initial post ?

You do realize 5 thwarted terror attacks could mean 1,000,000 people saved right?

Where does it say 5 terror attacks were thwarted?   Where does it say 1 was?

How do you know there wasn't?

fantastic logic

By giving up our freedoms we have given the terrorists what they wanted. I'd rather die a free man than give up liberty just to live a few more years.

How exactly have we "given up our freedoms?"

So you surely don't mind if the Obama Administration begins wiretapping all those right-wing militias in the hills of Idaho and Wyoming, right? After all, terrorism is terrorism - right?

They should wiretap your house because you are a ing nutjob.

Nice comeback. I'd expected you to come up with something lacking in substance, but not quite so totally devoid of thought.

You are a national security threat. If you are not being tracked by the FBI, you should be.

If this is a joke, then it's not funny.

If this isn't a joke, then you should see a doctor ASAP.

I don't think "sneak-and-peek" warrants are inherently unconstitutional or inherently bad, but it's worth noting this was a tactic first used in the War on Drugs and then codified in the Patriot Act.  The Patriot Act itself was a grab-bag of goodies for law enforcement, passed as an emergency measure with broad support after 9/11 but with many of its provisions not limited in scope to counterterrorism.

If we can agree that "emergency" legislation can bring unintended consequences and loss of liberty, then can we agree that other bills, including economic stimuli, health care reforms, environmental restrictions, etc. should be carefully considered and drafted in a way to minimize negative consequences and promote individual liberty?

Edit:  And yeah, it looks like the statute is for "sneak-and-peek" warrants, not warrantless wiretapping.....
